<image:caption>Calendula (calendula officinalis) has been used since the middle ages, with herbal traditions recorded as far back as the 13th century. Prized for it’s use for various skin ailments, the flower can be made into infusions, poultices, oils, washes, creams and salves and applied to wounds, burns, irritated skin. Rich in naturally occurring flavonoids, carotenoids and other botanical compounds, calendula is prized for its antioxidant and skin-soothing qualities. It has antioxidant activities, anti-microbial, anti-fungal & anti-inflammatory properties, meaning this bright orange flower packs an awfully powerful and comprehensive punch. This is why its use has continued over centuries. Calendula preparations became a familiar part of traditional European herbal medicine, and were later used in balms and creams for wounds and inflammation, including during the American Civil War and World War I. Today, if you look closely, you will still find it as a hero ingredient in a few big box skincare brands. Oh what a beautiful thing to have this knowledge passed down through so many generations. What we love about calendula is that its traditional use has always been wonderfully practical. In our signature infusion, dried calendula flowers are the first ingredient for this reason.</image:caption>

<image:title>Recipes - Calendula & Chamomile oil infusion - 2. Chamomile Flowers</image:title>
<image:caption>Chamomile is one of the oldest medicinal herbs in recorded history, with its use stretching back thousands of years to the ancient civilisations of Egypt, Greece and Rome. Even its name tells a story — derived from the Greek words for “ground apple”, a reference to the plant’s low-growing nature and the sweet, apple-like scent of its flowers. Chamomile was valued as much for its use on the outside of the body as the inside. Ancient traditions used the flowers in preparations for the skin, while later European herbalists made chamomile into infusions, baths, compresses, oils and ointments to soothe wounds, burns, dryness and irritated skin. By the medieval period, chamomile had become a well-established herb in European medicine. A 13th-century herbal from southern Italy even describes the flowers being boiled in olive oil and applied externally — a beautiful early example of the very same principle behind a botanical-infused oil. Its reputation as a gentle, calming herb continued throughout the centuries, with chamomile becoming a familiar ingredient in traditional preparations for sensitive, inflamed and irritated skin. We use chamomile alongside calendula in our signature herbal infusion, allowing both botanicals to slowly infuse into macadamia and coconut oils for six weeks. Chamomile brings its naturally calming and soothing qualities to the blend, complementing calendula’s long-standing tradition as a restorative skin herb. Together, these two humble flowers form the botanical heart of our infusion — a process inspired by centuries of herbal tradition, but made our own through time, patience and a little bit of alchemy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Recipes - Calendula & Chamomile oil infusion - 3. Macadamia oil</image:title>
<image:caption>Macadamia oil is a wonderfully nourishing oil for the skin, with a fatty acid profile that makes it particularly well suited to natural skincare. It is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, including oleic acid and palmitoleic acid (omega-7), as well as smaller amounts of linoleic acid, phytosterols and naturally occurring vitamin E compounds. These lipids help soften and condition the skin, while supporting its natural moisture barrier and helping to reduce moisture loss. One of the particularly interesting components of macadamia oil is palmitoleic acid, an omega-7 fatty acid that is also naturally present in human skin oils. As we age, the composition of our skin's natural oils changes, which is one reason oils with skin-compatible fatty acids can be valuable in moisturising and conditioning formulations. Macadamia oil also contains antioxidant compounds such as tocopherols and tocotrienols, which help protect oils and skin from oxidative stress. Rather than simply sitting on the surface, a well-formulated facial or body oil can work alongside the skin's own lipid environment, helping leave it feeling softer, smoother and more supple. Research into topical macadamia oil formulations has found improvements in skin hydration, and studies have also demonstrated antioxidant activity associated with the oil. This makes macadamia oil an ideal foundation for our signature herbal infusion.</image:caption>

<image:title>Recipes - Calendula & Chamomile oil infusion - 4. Coconut oil</image:title>
<image:caption>MCT oil, or medium-chain triglyceride oil, is a particularly versatile ingredient in skincare. Unlike traditional plant oils containing a broad mixture of fatty acids, MCT oil is made predominantly from two medium-chain fatty acids: caprylic acid (C8) and capric acid (C10). The result is an exceptionally light, silky oil that spreads easily across the skin without leaving the heavy or greasy feeling that some richer oils can. MCT oil works as an emollient, helping to soften, smooth and condition the skin. It also helps support the skin's moisture barrier by forming a lightweight lipid layer that slows the loss of water from the skin. Studies of topical formulations containing caprylic/capric triglyceride have demonstrated increased skin hydration and reduced transepidermal water loss, supporting its role as a moisturising and barrier-supportive ingredient. Another reason we love MCT oil is its versatility within a formulation. It helps create a smooth, silky application while also acting as a medium for oil-soluble botanical compounds. Its excellent oxidative stability makes it particularly well suited to oil-based skincare and long botanical infusions.</image:caption>

<image:title>Recipes - Calendula & Chamomile oil infusion - cold infused using time</image:title>
<image:caption>For our signature infusion, MCT oil works alongside macadamia oil to create the foundation in which our calendula and chamomile flowers slowly infuse for six weeks. The MCT contributes a light, silky feel and helps condition the skin, while providing an effective oil medium for our botanicals. Together, the oils create a beautiful balance — nourishing without feeling heavy, and allowing our six-week herbal infusion to become an integral part of many of our formulations. This oil is the strained and used as the base ingredient in a lot of our products including Lip Balm, Calming Cream, Poroporo Cream, Bite Me balm, Bite Me Oil and Perfume Balms.</image:caption>

<image:title>Recipes - NATURES Pain relief - COMFREY</image:title>
<image:caption>Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) has an extraordinary history in herbal medicine. Its traditional name “knitbone” reflects its centuries-old reputation for helping with injuries, bruising, sprains and broken bones. While we now understand that a topical herb cannot literally knit a broken bone back together, modern research has found some evidence for topical comfrey preparations in relieving pain and inflammation associated with muscle and joint complaints, sprains, strains and bruising. Comfrey contains compounds including allantoin, rosmarinic acid and polysaccharides that have been investigated for their anti-inflammatory and tissue-supporting properties. We use dried comfrey leaves infused into olive oil, allowing the plant's oil-soluble constituents to be extracted slowly before the infused oil becomes part of the balm. Comfrey is one of the ingredients that gives this formulation its strong herbal tradition around muscles, joints, bruising and physical aches.</image:caption>

<image:title>Recipes - NATURES Pain relief - PLANTAIN</image:title>
<image:caption>Plantain (Plantago species) has a long history as a traditional wound and skin herb. Its leaves were traditionally crushed or bruised and applied directly to wounds, bites, burns, bruises and irritated skin, and preparations of ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata) are still used today in herbal skincare. The leaves contain compounds including iridoid glycosides such as aucubin and catalpol, flavonoids, tannins, polysaccharides and phenolic compounds, which have been investigated for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity as well as their role in supporting wound healing. For our balm, the dried plantain leaves are slowly infused into olive oil, rather than simply adding a powdered herb to the finished product. Oil infusion allows the oil-soluble constituents of the plant to migrate into the olive oil over time, creating a botanical oil that can then be incorporated into the balm. Plantain's traditional reputation as a soothing, skin-supportive herb makes it particularly well suited to a balm intended for areas of everyday discomfort, knocks and overworked muscles.</image:caption>

<image:title>Recipes - NATURES Pain relief - CAYENNE PEPPER</image:title>
<image:caption>Cayenne (Capsicum annuum/frutescens) brings something quite different to the formulation. Its characteristic heat comes from capsaicin, a compound that interacts with sensory nerve receptors involved in the perception of heat and pain. Interestingly, although cayenne initially produces a warming or burning sensation, repeated topical exposure to capsaicin can reduce the sensitivity of certain pain-sensing nerves. This is why capsaicin creams and other topical preparations have been studied for various types of pain, including some musculoskeletal and nerve-related pain. Historically, hot peppers were used in traditional medicine in various parts of the world as warming remedies and preparations for aches and circulation. In a balm, cayenne gives the formulation its characteristic warming sensation, making it particularly complementary to herbs such as plantain, comfrey and kawakawa. The intensity of that warmth depends heavily on the concentration and preparation of the cayenne, which is also why a well-formulated balm can provide a warming sensation without necessarily feeling overwhelmingly hot.</image:caption>

<image:title>Recipes - NATURES Pain relief - KAWAKAWA leaf</image:title>
<image:caption>Kawakawa contains a fascinating mix of naturally occurring plant compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and sensory properties. Some of these compounds have been shown in laboratory research to influence inflammatory pathways and pain-sensing receptors, providing an interesting scientific perspective on the plant's long history of use for aches, irritation and discomfort. Scientific research into kawakawa is still developing, but its place within Māori rongoā is longstanding, with generations of knowledge surrounding the plant's medicinal uses. We respect that body of knowledge as something in its own right, while continuing to learn from the growing body of modern research into what makes this remarkable plant so active. We use dried kawakawa leaves, slowly infused into olive oil to draw out the plant's oil-soluble constituents before incorporating the infusion into our balm. Kawakawa is a prolific native tree, particularly abundant throughout the North Island, and its availability in our own region makes it a natural choice for our formulation. Combined with our other warming and soothing botanicals, it brings its own unique character and properties to the balm.</image:caption>

<image:title>Recipes - NATURES Pain relief - turmeric extract</image:title>
<image:caption>Turmeric is one of the most extensively studied plants in modern herbal research, with particular interest in its naturally occurring curcuminoids and their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. Modern research has investigated turmeric and curcumin in relation to a wide range of inflammatory and skin conditions, with clinical studies reporting promising effects in areas including psoriasis, itching, skin irritation, wound healing and radiation-related skin damage. Research has also demonstrated effects on inflammatory markers and oxidative stress, helping explain why turmeric continues to attract so much interest in modern natural health and skincare. We use turmeric extract as part of the botanical blend in our Deep Pain Relief Balm, bringing its long history of traditional use together with what modern research is discovering about this remarkable plant. It complements the warming qualities of cayenne and black pepper and the soothing botanicals in our herbal infusion, creating a formulation designed to provide comforting care to areas of everyday aches, tension and discomfort.</image:caption>
